Alex is a sociable and self-confessed ‘cheeky’ gentleman who is in his early 60’s. He stays on his own with some support to do cleaning and shopping. A childhood accident has left him with a knee injury which has affected his mobility over time. Maureen lives in the same town and recently retired. She was drawn to citizen advocacy as she had witnessed how difficult it can be for folks to have their voice heard through her working life.

“It’s good having some-one there for me. I don’t feel so worried about things.
Alex

Alex and Maureen were introduced in January 2017 and got on well straight away. They both have a good sense of humour which has helped them to get to know each other. Through conversation it has emerged that Alex and Maureen used to work together ‘tattie picking’ many years ago- although they didn’t know each other at that time! They have enjoyed sharing memories from that time.

Alex and Maureen usually meet up every few weeks, or if Alex is looking for support with a particular issue. They have dealt with a variety of issues such as banking and liaising with utility companies. Maureen has also been able to support Alex to be more independent in dealing with his household affairs. They have enjoyed coming along to some of the social events organised by the Citizen Advocacy Project and like to go out for a cuppy and blether.
